Saudi Arabia Pursues Civil Nuclear Agreement with the U.S.

Saudi Arabia is actively seeking a civil nuclear agreement with the United States to diversify its energy sources and reduce carbon emissions, aligning with its Vision 2030 objectives. The proposed deal would enable the kingdom to develop nuclear energy for domestic electricity needs, freeing up more oil for export. However, concerns have been raised due to Saudi Arabia’s statements about developing nuclear capabilities in response to Iran’s potential acquisition of nuclear weapons. The U.S. is interested in the strategic and commercial benefits of such a deal, but any agreement would need to comply with U.S. legal nonproliferation requirements under the Atomic Energy Act. If talks with the U.S. fail, Saudi Arabia may consider alternative partners such as China, Russia, South Korea, or France.
